Hideo Kojima Confirms Death Stranding 3 Concept, But No Plans Yet

Hideo Kojima Confirms He Has Written the Concept for Death Stranding 3, But Isn’t Ready to Develop It

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, the highly anticipated sequel to Hideo Kojima’s 2019 masterpiece Death Stranding, recently launched to strong reception. Critics and fans alike praised it as “bold, exciting, and original,” solidifying Kojima’s reputation as one of the most innovative creators in the gaming industry. Naturally, with the sequel now out, speculation has turned toward the possibility of a third entry in the series.

Interestingly, Kojima has already revealed that he has written the concept for Death Stranding 3. However, he made it equally clear that he has no immediate plans to bring that concept to life—at least not by himself.

Kojima Speaks on Death Stranding 3

During an interview in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as part of the Death Stranding 2 World Strand Tour, Kojima was asked directly about whether a third game could be on the horizon. His response shed light on his current mindset:

“I’m not planning to do that at the moment, because the ending of Death Stranding 2 was my finale of 1 and 2. But I already wrote the concept of DS3, so I have that in data. I hope that someone would create it for me.”

This statement implies that while Kojima envisions a continuation of the series, he sees Death Stranding 2 as a conclusive end to the current storyline. The fact that he has drafted a concept means the creative foundation is already in place, but he does not feel the need to personally develop it right now.

Concerns About Legacy and the Future of Kojima Productions

This isn’t the first time Kojima has hinted at others possibly continuing his work. In a separate discussion earlier this year, he shared a more personal reflection: he has been thinking deeply about his own mortality and what will become of his studio, Kojima Productions, after his passing.

In May, Kojima revealed that he created a USB stick containing his ideas and visions for the studio’s future. He handed it over to his personal assistant, describing it as “a kind of will.”

“I gave a USB stick with all my ideas on it to my personal assistant, kind of like a will. Perhaps they could continue to make things after I’m gone at Kojima Productions. This is a fear for me: what happens to Kojima Productions after I’m gone? I don’t want them to just manage our existing IP.”

This shows how much Kojima values creativity beyond his own lifetime. Instead of leaving the company to merely preserve or repackage past projects, he wants it to continue generating original work. It also suggests that, if Kojima does not personally make Death Stranding 3, there’s a possibility his team or another visionary creator could one day carry the torch.

Kojima’s Current Projects

Although fans may be disappointed that Death Stranding 3 is not in active development, there’s no shortage of exciting work from Kojima in the near future. The world of Death Stranding itself is expanding beyond video games, as a live-action film adaptation is currently being developed in collaboration with A24, the acclaimed studio behind films like Everything Everywhere All at Once and Hereditary.

Beyond that, Kojima is also working on two new games. One is the mysterious horror project OD, created in partnership with Xbox, which is expected to push boundaries in interactive storytelling. The other is Physint, a game described as a spiritual successor to Metal Gear Solid, which could deliver the cinematic espionage action fans have long been hoping for.

What This Means for Fans

For now, fans should not expect Death Stranding 3 anytime soon, but Kojima’s admission that he already has the concept written is an encouraging sign that the universe could continue in the future. Whether it is Kojima himself or someone else who eventually develops the third game, the foundation is already in place.

At the same time, Kojima’s reflections about mortality and the future of his studio provide a rare and honest look into the mind of one of gaming’s greatest auteurs. His desire to leave behind a creative roadmap shows that, even if he is not the one directly making future projects, his vision will continue to influence the industry for years to come.

Conclusion

While Death Stranding 3 is not on the immediate horizon, Kojima fans have plenty to look forward to. From the upcoming live-action film to major new projects like OD and Physint, Kojima Productions remains one of the most ambitious and forward-thinking studios in gaming. And with a written concept for Death Stranding 3 already in existence, the door to the next chapter in this strange and emotional universe remains wide open—it may simply be waiting for the right moment, or the right creator, to bring it to life.
