A fresh reimagining of Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire is taking the community by storm—and what’s even more impressive is that it was developed almost entirely by one person.
It’s been over a decade since Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire launched as the official remakes of the Gen 3 classics. While many fans enjoyed them, others felt that Game Freak strayed too far from the charm and mechanics of the originals.
Enter Pokémon Royal Sapphire—a brand-new ROM hack created by indie developer Gongas, who released the project just last Sunday.
Described as a “heavily enhanced, reimagined version of Pokémon Sapphire,” the hack aims to preserve the nostalgic feel of the original while delivering modern improvements. Gongas wanted to recapture the essence of classic Gen 3 gameplay and has done so with remarkable attention to detail.
But this isn’t your average ROM hack. Pokémon Royal Sapphire introduces a wide range of fresh features, including:
-
Custom trainer sprites
-
Brand-new maps
-
An updated set of starter Pokémon
-
Expanded post-game content
For those eager to try it, instructions on how to get the patch running can be found on Gongas’ official Twitter post. Importantly, the project is completely legal—since it functions only as a free patch for the original game. As long as players use a legally obtained ROM of Pokémon Sapphire, there’s no risk of running into Nintendo’s strict legal policies.
If you’ve already downloaded an earlier version, make sure to grab the latest update patches to enjoy the most polished experience of Pokémon Royal Sapphire.
